What is the Psychology behind generational Trauma?

Generational trauma denotes the extension of trauma from one generation to the next. This phenomenon initiates when a collective undergoes a traumatic event that precipitates economic, cultural, and familial distress. Consequently, individuals within that group may manifest physical or psychological symptoms in response to the enduring impact of the trauma.

Trauma arises in response to a profoundly distressing event, leading to adverse physical and emotional consequences. Such events encompass a range of experiences, including abuse, discrimination, natural disasters, racism, genocide, and war.

How do you find Generational Trauma in Astrology?

Generational trauma in astrology refers to the concept that certain placements and configurations within a specific generation's birth charts may indicate a shared set of challenges, issues, or themes that are passed down through family lines. This idea is rooted in the belief that the positions of planets at the time of an individual's birth can influence not only their personal experiences but also the collective experiences of a generation.

Generational trauma in astrology is often associated with aspects that are considered challenging, such as squares (90-degree angles) or oppositions (180-degree angles) between planets. These aspects can suggest tension, conflict, or a need for transformation within the collective consciousness of a generation. However with trauma there is usually some themes around the chart. There will be multiple placements that indicate a need for healing in this area and usually this trauma is initiated by the environment and family.

How do you avoid generational trauma?

As a therapist and Astrologer, it's important to help my clients find realistic avenues to make changes. A lot of people do not realise they have these traumas and they affect their interpersonal relationships, along with how they connect to themselves. Having therapy, or a consultation to fully explore what hidden traumas there are, and work on healing that. This might take some inner child work which can be a number of sessions. Inner child works by visiting the inner child as the person you are today and communicating with your younger self. This would be done under Hypnosis. However, therapy in general can help with healing.

Trauma can influence the expression of our genes which then would affect our children (if you choose to have them). I am always pro therapy because this helps to heal pain which would show up as parents who resolve issues in a child's natal chart. This leads to a child who may not have to deal with the trauma from generations before. The avoid generational trauma, have continuous therapy!

Here are some traumas I have read in charts:

  • Domestic Abuse:

Domestic abuse is usually generational. If you witnessed your parents fighting or a parent being abusive, you are more likely to end up in an abusive relationship or end up as the abuser. Even if you are trying to avoid this, there can be familiar patterns that can lead you back into those relationships. There is also a theme where friendship circles are smaller. So issues with people in general.

Common placements: Mars in the 7th house, Mars in the 4th house, Mars Square Moon, Mars in the 12th house, Mars intercepted, Mars square chiron, Mars inconjunct Chiron or saturn, Mars Rx, Mars Square Pluto. The abuser can show up in these placements in synastry too.

  • Financial Issues:

Financial issues can start from the family environment. This can also relates to your sense of security within yourself and your possessions. You may have grown in an environment where you were not able to have things. Perhaps you experiences a lot of losses and witnessed your family being in debt. Your parents may not have prioritised money in a way that maximises their opportunities.

Common Placements: Chiron in taurus, Chiron square, conjunct, opposite Venus. Venus Rx, Chiron in the 2nd house, Venus in the 12th house, Taurus Moon, Moon in the 2nd house, Taurus in the 12th house.

  • Identity Issues

Identity issues stem from parents who may not have displayed enough encouragement towards your interests. They might not have made the effort to be present when you needed them the most. Sometimes parent can prioritise other things in their lives and may not display a lot of commitment or have stability towards anything. The lack of presence can come from your parents not having the presence of parents in their lives too. Presence can be living with a parent but they are always working, or always sleeping or even a parent in a different country.

Common Placements: 12th house Sun, Pisces sun, Pisces moon, Neptune conjunct, square or opposite the Sun, south node conjunct sun, neptune in the 1st house, neptune in the 10th house, neptune in the 4th house, neptune conjunct the midheaven,

  • Addictions and Mental Health issues in the birth chart

Addiction in the birth chart show up in different ways. Addictions are usually linked to mental health as well. Sometimes if a parent is dealing with mental health issues, a child find a way to cope via addictions. Addictions lead to filling a void that was missing. Addictions can be food, drugs, alcohol etc. If a parent has addiction issues, there is usually a cycle from their parents which is then passed through the generations.

Common Placements: Mercury in Pisces, Mercury in Pisces Rx, Mercury Rx, Mercury in the 12th house, Mercury square, conjunct or oppose Neptune, Jupiter conjunct the south node, Jupiter in the 12th, Jupiter in the 2nd house, Jupiter in the 5th, Jupiter conjunct, square opposite Venus, Venus in the 12th house, Venus in the 2nd, Venus in the 5th, Venus square, opposite, conjunct Neptune, Neptune conjunct the south node, Pisces stelliums, Neptune dominants

  • Intimacy and safety issues

Intimacy and safety issues stem from the lack of emotional or financial safety and forming close connections with our parents. Usually growing up with parents but not feeling very close with them. Usually this is a Moon issues so it can come directly from the mother. Due to the lack of safety in their childhood, they fear having children. They fear their children being around their parents. These people are can have a hard time forgiving as they can unconsciously 'punish' people in their lives when they subconsciously want to punish their parents. They can cling onto their emotions and respond by defending themselves. These responses are from parents who invalidated how their children felt and did not display transparency.
